About this bar
Smoke & Bitters sits in a coconut grove on Pehebiya Beach in Hiriketiya, a surf town on Sri Lanka's southern coast about two and a half hours from Colombo. Co-founders Don Ranasinghe and Lahiru Perera opened the room in 2020 as a beach bar and smokehouse, not a tasting-menu restaurant, pairing wood-fired plates with tiki-leaning cocktails built from local arrack, rum, and house-made bitters. This profile covers what the deck feels like at sunset, what to drink from the current menu, and how to book a table before the night fills up.
01
Our verdict on Sri Lanka's most welcoming bar
Smoke & Bitters earns its place by making a long journey feel worth it. You arrive at a coconut grove where the sand meets the bar, order a Pamuditha's Punch or a Pepper Pots, and stay for smoked plates that share the same Sri Lankan pantry as the drinks. The room is relaxed rather than polished, and the team treats every guest like a regular. That warmth is why it took Michter's Art of Hospitality Award 2026 alongside The Best Bar in Sri Lanka and a No.30 finish on our 2026 Asia ranking.
02
What to expect on your first visit
Expect an open-air beach bar, not a formal dining room. Coconut-tree pillars, antique ceiling tiles, and batik-topped tables set the tone, with the Indian Ocean a few steps away. Most seats are under the palms or on the grass, so dress for sand and sea breeze. Service is warm and unhurried, cocktails arrive with visible house bitters and syrups, and the smokehouse kitchen sends out shareable plates from a wood fire. Sunset is the natural peak hour, and the room stays busy through the evening service.
03
What to order at Smoke & Bitters
Start with Pamuditha's Punch, a rum and halmilla arrack blend with absinthe, naarang, falernum, coconut, and bay leaf bitters that reads like the bar in one glass. Pepper Pots brings gin, pineapple, spiced orgeat, cumin, pepper, chilli, and spiced bitters for heat without losing balance. Peni Ceylon pairs Ceylon arrack with coconut sugar, vanilla, and halmilla wood smoke, while Mai Chai uses chai-infused rum and chair syrup for a tiki riff rooted in Sri Lankan spice. Bananarama, with halmilla arrack and smoked wild bee honey, rounds out the signatures if you want something richer.

How to visit Smoke & Bitters in Hiriketiya
The bar is on Pehebiya Beach at Pehebiya Rd in Dickwella, Matara, about two and a half hours south of Colombo by road. It opens daily from 17:00 to 23:00. Reservations are recommended because the deck fills quickly, especially on weekends and in surf season. 05
How the bar builds Sri Lankan flavour in the glass
Import restrictions pushed the team toward local spirits and produce, and that constraint became the programme. Arrack from family distilleries, house-made liqueurs, bitters, syrups, and tinctures sit behind every serve, with bay leaf, lemongrass, Ceylon, and smoke-orange bitters among the staples. Wood smoke from the kitchen crosses into cocktails like Peni Ceylon, while tiki classics from Don the Beachcomber and Trader Vic provide the structural frame. Ranasinghe, raised in London and back in Sri Lanka since 2016, and Perera built the bar from a six-person crew into a team of around sixty drawn from nearby villages.

Why Smoke & Bitters is No.30 in Asia for 2026
At No.30 on our 2026 Asia ranking, Smoke & Bitters is the sole Sri Lankan entry on the list and The Best Bar in Sri Lanka for the year. It also received Michter's Art of Hospitality Award 2026, given to the room that makes guests feel most welcome on the continent. The bar has climbed the Asia ranking for three consecutive years and reached No.67 on The World's 50 Best Bars 2025, putting a beach town of surfers and travellers on the global cocktail map without losing its local roots.
