The World's 50 Best Bars list measures industry-voted bar experiences, not a public score, a cocktail competition result or a star rating. The World's 50 Best Bars says the annual list is voted on by more than 800 anonymous drinks experts across 28 geographic regions.

That matters because a rank is a consensus signal from people who visit bars for work: bartenders, drinks writers, consultants, brand people and other sector specialists. It is not built from customer review volume. It also does not mean every listed bar gives the same kind of night.

The World's 50 Best Bars says voters cast votes based on bar experiences within the previous 18 months, and Deloitte is named by The World's 50 Best Bars as the independent adjudicator of the voting process. The useful takeaway for a drinker is simple: the list rewards remembered experiences. It does not replace basic trip checks such as opening hours, location, booking route or dress code.

A high rank can point you to a bar with strong execution. It cannot tell you whether you want a hotel martini trolley, a street-side highball, a tasting menu, a loud room or a 30-minute queue. That is where we read the list alongside the operating details.

How should drinkers read a ranking before choosing a bar?

Start with the rank, then qualify it by city, service style and access. A ranked bar that is perfect for a late walk-in may be wrong for a fixed dinner plan, while a reservation-only bar may be the better choice for a short trip.

Take Barcelona. Sips is ranked #3 on The World's 50 Best Bars 2025 and was #1 on The World's 50 Best Bars 2023. It is open Tuesday to Saturday from 18:30 to 02:00, closed Monday and Sunday, and reservations are essential. Its Esencia tasting menu has 14 seats and serves 10 sips from €75. That is a planned booking, not a casual overflow stop.

Paradiso, also in Barcelona, is ranked #4 on The World's 50 Best Bars 2025. It does not take advance bookings and uses a virtual queue via QR code at the door from 15:00. The entrance is through a refrigerator door inside a pastrami shop. For drinkers, that means the bar can be a strong anchor for a night in El Born, but the access model asks for time flexibility.

London gives a different lesson. Connaught Bar is ranked #6 on The World's 50 Best Bars 2025, but it is walk-in only and closed Sunday. Tayer + Elementary is ranked #5 on the same 2025 list and is also walk-in only, with separate opening patterns for Elementary and Tayer. If your trip has one open evening, you should build a backup nearby rather than treat rank as a reservation.

What is the practical booking route for a ranked bar?

Check the bar's own booking rule first, then plan around that rule rather than around the rank. The most common mistake is assuming that a higher-ranked bar must take reservations.

We sort bars into four practical access types.

First, reservation-essential rooms. Sips is the clean example in our current profiles: book through the website or by email, especially if you want the 14-seat Esencia format. Panda & Sons in Edinburgh also requires reservations through ResDiary on its website and lists a maximum group size of 8.

Second, walk-in only rooms. Connaught Bar takes no reservations. Bar Nouveau in Paris is walk-in only, has about 12 seats at the ground-floor bar, and operates daily from 15:00 to 01:00. Foco in Barcelona is also walk-in only with no reservations.

Third, hybrid rooms. Line in Athens recommends reservations on busy nights but accepts walk-ins. It is open Monday to Sunday from 10:00 to 02:00, sits in Kato Petralona, and has a reference price of about $12 per cocktail. If Athens is the trip, start with Line as a ranked anchor and then build around opening hours rather than distance alone.

Fourth, queue-managed rooms. Paradiso is the obvious case because of its QR system. With any queue model, arrive early enough to scan, then use the waiting time for dinner or a nearby first drink. Do not put a timed restaurant booking immediately after a queue-only bar unless you are comfortable losing one of the two.

How much should a drinker budget for World's 50 Best bars?

Budget by city and format, not by rank alone. In our current profiles, listed cocktail reference prices run from about $10 at The Clumsies in Athens to about CHF 24 at Late Bloomers in Zurich.

A few reference points help. Line in Athens is about $12 per cocktail. The Bar in Front of the Bar in Athens is mid-range, around €€ per cocktail, and its street bar is walk-in friendly. Sips in Barcelona is about $16 per cocktail, while Paradiso is about $18. Himkok in Oslo is about $18. Locale Firenze is about $22. Gucci Giardino in Florence is about €21. These are not like-for-like experiences, since tasting menus, hotel service, city cost base and venue size change the final bill.

Drinkers should also separate first-round cost from full-night cost. A walk-in visit for one drink at a busy bar can be a controlled purchase. A reserved tasting menu fixes more of the spend in advance. Sips' Esencia menu, with 10 sips from €75, is a different decision from a single cocktail at the main bar.

We do not recommend building a trip around a single average price for the whole list. Currencies differ, service styles differ, and some bars have food or tasting formats that change the order value. Use price as a filter after you have decided the style of night.

Which type of ranked bar fits a drinker’s night?

Match the bar type to the occasion before you compare ranks. A hotel bar, a speakeasy and a neighbourhood room solve different problems for a drinker.

If you want formal service, a hotel bar can be the safer buy. Connaught Bar in Mayfair has hotel pacing, a Monday to Saturday schedule from 16:00 to 01:00, and a walk-in-only policy. Scarfes Bar in Holborn takes online bookings for up to five guests, while walk-ins are welcome. Himkok in Oslo has an on-site aquavit, gin and vodka micro-distillery. Those details tell you more about the drinking route than rank position alone.

How can drinkers turn the list into an itinerary?

Build the itinerary around clusters, booking friction and closing times. A ranked bar should sit inside a workable route, not force the whole night into a taxi plan.
