About this bar
Vender opened in 2019 in Taichung's West District, hidden behind a coin-operated vending machine facade on Wuquan West 4th Street near the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts. Co-founders Summer Chen and Darren Lim, both with Singapore bar careers behind them, built a room where guests sniff ingredient pockets before ordering drinks named after vending machines. The bar sits at No.15 on our 2026 Asia ranking and holds The Best Bar in Taiwan 2026 for the second year running. This profile covers the entrance ritual, what to order from the pocket menu, and how reservations work.
01
Our verdict on Taichung's vending-machine bar
Vender is one of the few concept bars in Asia where the gimmick actually improves the drinks. The coin-operated entrance is quick theatre, the welcome Singapore Sling shot sets the tone, and the pocket menu lets you smell dried herbs, spices, and tinctures before you commit. Summer Chen's Southeast Asian builds land with real balance rather than novelty for its own sake, and the room stays warm and conversational even when every seat is taken. If you have one cocktail night in Taichung, book here first.
02
What to expect on your first visit
The address sits on the Art Museum Parkway in West District, where a glowing VENDER sign marks what looks like an ordinary vending machine. Insert a coin, the door unlocks, and you step into a low-lit salon of timber, sofas, and a central bar. Staff greet you with a miniature Singapore Sling, a nod to Chen and Lim's years in Singapore. Vending machines inside sell bottled cocktails and beers, while the main list lives in a wooden box with cubby holes holding samples of each drink's key ingredients. Counter seats face the working bar; tables and an upstairs private room suit groups.
03
What to order at Vender
Start with A Cigar Vending Machine, Chen's dark rum serve with red wine syrup, aromatised wine, lemon, egg white, and chocolate bitters, finished with smoke from Taiwanese cypress wood chips. The Milo Dinosaur reimagines the childhood chocolate malt drink as a hazelnut yoghurt-washed whisky with apple, and it has become the easiest way to understand the house style. Each side of the pocket menu lists six signatures named after vending machine types: the left column runs lighter and more refreshing, the right column runs spicier and stronger. Southeast Asian bar snacks such as bak chor mee, kaya toast, and chilli crab pair well if you are staying for a round or two.

How Vender builds Southeast Asian flavour
Chen returned to Taiwan after winning world cocktail titles with Gin Mare and St James Rum, and she and Lim designed Vender around the vending machines that line every Taiwanese street. The pocket menu is the technical heart: guests touch and smell the dried botanicals, spices, and small bottled tinctures that define each serve before the bartender builds the drink. Many signatures lean on herbs and produce from across Southeast Asia, while finishing touches such as cypress chip smoking tie the programme to Taiwan. The result is a bar that reads playful on first glance and precise in the glass.

Why Vender is No.15 in Asia for 2026
Vender climbed six places to No.15 on our 2026 Asia ranking and retained The Best Bar in Taiwan 2026, sponsored by Langjiu, for the second consecutive year. It also placed No.74 on The World's 50 Best Bars 2025, up from No.20 on the Asia list in 2025. Taiwan placed three rooms on the 2026 ranking, with To Infinity & Beyond in Taipei at No.35 and The Han-Jia in Tainan entering at No.41, but Vender remains the island's highest-ranked cocktail room and the one most visitors should anchor a Taichung trip around.
