About this bar
Carrots Bar hides in the basement of Fairgrounds SCBD, a 14-seat room built around an eight-seat communal counter where strangers are expected to talk. Co-founders Alvin Sung Jaya and Monica Jonan, with creative partner Anthony Luis, run a smoking-free sanctuary with a rotating menu of culinary-minded cocktails rather than a volume-driven nightclub format. This profile covers what the room feels like, what to order from the current list, and how walk-in seating works on a typical Jakarta night.
01
Our verdict on Carrots Bar
Jakarta's cocktail scene often rewards size: loud rooms, secluded booths, and cigarette haze. Carrots chose the opposite path, and the bet has paid off. Fourteen seats, a communal counter, clear air, and drinks that read like a kitchen lab without losing classic structure make this one of the most distinctive rooms in Southeast Asia. It is serious about flavour but not about posture, and that balance is exactly why it climbed thirteen places to No.22 on our 2026 Asia ranking.

What to expect on your first visit
Descend into the Fairgrounds basement in SCBD and push past the carrot-shaped door handle into a low-lit, wood-panelled room that feels part speakeasy, part shared dining table. The eight-seat communal bar is the best place to sit: bartenders pour across the counter while standing room fills around you. The vibe is convivial rather than clubby, and the smoking-free policy means conversation stays audible even on a packed Friday. Most of the crowd is local regulars and visiting bar professionals, and English is common at the counter.

What to order at Carrots Bar
The current menu, I Drink, Therefore I Am, rotates seasonally and maps each drink on graphs from sweet to savoury, herbal to sour, and spirit-forward to creamy, which makes ordering easy even if cocktail lists usually paralyse you. Start with the Kretek if you want the house style: a negroni-inspired serve with chocolate and tobacco notes and none of the smoke that usually comes with them. Banana daiquiri riffs and sarsaparilla-smoked highballs show the kitchen-minded R&D, and Indo-Chinese pantry ingredients appear throughout without turning the list into a gimmick.

How Carrots builds its cocktails
Alvin Sung Jaya and Monica Jonan opened Carrots as a community-first counter bar, and Anthony Luis shapes the creative direction on menus that treat cocktails like plated dishes. Each season's list goes through proper R&D: Indo-Chinese ingredients, kitchen techniques, and flavour balancing that shows up in serves like smoked highballs and savoury negroni riffs rather than in jargon on the menu. The flavour graphs are not decoration. They tell you exactly where a drink sits before you commit, which keeps the room approachable for first-timers and regulars alike.

Why Carrots Bar is No.22 in Asia for 2026
Carrots Bar placed No.22 on our 2026 Asia ranking, up from No.34 in 2025, as one of five Indonesian rooms on the list, with 1920 Lounge at No.1 and Modernhaus at No.12, and the wider Jakarta renaissance the judges noted across the region. The ranking rewards a format that goes against Jakarta's default nightlife model: small, smoke-free, design-led, and built for conversation at a communal bar rather than for bottle service in a corner booth. In a city where international visitors now plan cocktail crawls alongside food trips, Carrots has become a reference point for how hospitality can scale down and still rank among the best in Asia.
