About this bar
Opium occupies the 4th and 5th floors of the Potong building on Vanich 1 Road, a restored Yaowarat shophouse that once traded Chinese medicine and, in an earlier era, hosted an opium den. Created by Arnon KK Hoontrakul and led by Italian bar manager Matteo Cadeddu, the room pairs dark lacquer and rooftop garden seats with a deep menu of cocktails, mocktails, and four house-made gins shaped by Thai regions. This profile covers what the space feels like, which theatrical serves to start with, and how reservations by zone actually work.
01
Our verdict on Opium in Bangkok
Opium is one of the few Bangkok bars where the room and the drinks share the same story. You rise through the Potong building into lacquered lounges, a rooftop glass house, and bartender seats that feel removed from Yaowarat's street noise without losing its late-night energy. The menu is long, but the six Liquid Surreality categories give you a map, and the team is happy to steer you toward bright, spirit-forward, or low-ABV serves. If you want a single Chinatown night that pairs serious cocktails with the option of Potong's bar snacks downstairs, start here.

What to expect on your first visit
The address is the Potong building at the corner of Yaowa Phanit Road and Vanich 1 Road. Enter at street level, take the small elevator, and step onto the 4th floor bar or continue to the 5th floor rooftop zones. Counter seats put you closest to the shakers; lounge sofas suit longer conversations; the rooftop garden catches golden hour before dinner service peaks below. The room is polished rather than loud, with a smart-casual dress code that excludes sleeveless shirts and open-toe shoes for men and flip-flops for women. You do not need a Potong dinner reservation to drink upstairs, though many guests pair the two.

What to order at Opium
Start with the Campfire if you want the house style at its most theatrical: dark chocolate bourbon, apple vinegar reduction, coffee flower honey, and mulled wine arrive with a basket of aromatics that sells the mountaintop story before the first sip. The Opium Oath and World Champion are the ritual and crowd-pleaser anchors on the current list, while Pukka leans on scent as much as taste. Four house-made gins, each tied to a different Thai region, are worth a side-by-side flight if you like botanical depth. Tell Matteo's team whether you want apéritif, sparkle, acid, or solo strength and let them navigate the nearly 50-cocktail menu.

How to visit Opium in Bangkok
Opium is at 422 Vanich 1 Rd in Samphanthawong. By MRT, take the Blue Line to Wat Mangkon, exit 1, walk Plaeng Nam Road to Yaowarat, and follow Vanich 1 to the Potong corner. The bar opens Sunday to Tuesday and Thursday to Saturday from 16:00 to 01:00 and is closed Wednesday. Reserve a zone at opiumbarbangkok.com/reservation or call +66 82 979 3950; bartender seats, lounge sofas, rooftop glass house, and rooftop garden fill first on weekend nights. Drivers should use Wat Chaiyaphum Karam parking and walk three minutes rather than trying the narrow alley with a large van.

How Opium builds Liquid Surreality
Arnon KK Hoontrakul conceived Opium around Fluid Surreality, the idea that a drink can transport you the way this building once did for opium smokers in a legal past. Matteo Cadeddu, formerly in Australia, Singapore, and Mumbai, runs the programme day to day with in-house modifiers, syrups, colorings, and garnishes rather than bottled shortcuts. Bottle infusions and seasonal Expression menus extend the core six categories, and weekend tuk-tuk hops to nearby Chinatown bars turn a reservation into a rolling bar crawl. The kitchen one floor down can send up red oil wontons or wagyu fried rice if you want food without leaving the building.

Why Opium is No.26 in Asia for 2026
Opium debuts at No.26 on our 2026 Asia ranking, recognition for a bar that opened in December 2021 and quickly became a reference point in Bangkok's Chinatown revival. It sits directly above Potong, itself a fixture on Asia's restaurant lists, yet stands on its own menu of nearly 50 cocktails, four regional gins, and serves like the Campfire that judges and regulars cite as transportive rather than gimmicky. Bangkok placed multiple rooms in the 2026 top 50, and Opium's combination of heritage building, theatrical hospitality, and Thai-rooted ingredients keeps it in that tier.
